The End of an Era: Truth in Women’s Sports

Virgil Walker

The ongoing battle for fairness in women’s sports reveals a deeper cultural crisis: the rejection of God’s created order. The San Jose State University (SJSU) women’s volleyball team recently became the epicenter of a national controversy. Teams like Boise State, Wyoming, Utah State, and Nevada chose to forfeit matches against SJSU in protest of a transgender athlete’s inclusion. Boise State even withdrew entirely from the Mountain West Conference tournament, allowing SJSU to advance directly to the championship.

These actions reflect more than an athletic dispute; they expose the broader conflict between a society that increasingly rejects God’s design for males and females and those who uphold His truth. Scripture is clear that God created humanity male and female (Genesis 1:27), assigning unique roles to each for His glory and human flourishing. The cultural embrace of gender ideology, which detaches identity from biology, represents a rebellion against this divine order.

This rejection of truth has real-world consequences, including the erasure of opportunities for female athletes. Decades of progress in women’s sports, made possible by acknowledging God-given distinctions, are now at risk. Yet, the tide is turning. The bold actions of athletes, teams, and their supporters mark a cultural shift—one that seeks to restore fairness, integrity, and justice in a way that honors God’s design.

God-Given Distinctions: The Foundation of Fairness

The tension in women’s sports stems from a cultural movement that denies the significance of biological distinctions. God designed men and women with intentionality, equipping them with complementary strengths and roles (1 Corinthians 11:11-12; Ephesians 5:22-33). These differences are not arbitrary or oppressive but essential to fulfilling God’s purposes. In athletics, these distinctions are particularly evident, as men and women are created with physical differences that allow each to excel in their respective domains.

Policies that allow biological males to compete in women’s sports disregard these distinctions, placing ideology above truth and harming female athletes in the process. This is not merely an issue of fairness; it is a question of fidelity to the Creator’s design. Restoring fairness requires affirming God’s creation of male and female and rejecting the cultural lie that gender is fluid or self-defined.

Legal and Cultural Consequences: A Biblical Lens

The legal battles surrounding this issue reflect the high stakes for fairness and justice. In Gaines v. NCAA, former University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines, alongside other athletes, has taken a stand against the NCAA, arguing that its policies allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports violate Title IX protections. This lawsuit, ongoing in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, underscores the ways these policies undermine the equal opportunities Title IX was designed to protect.

Meanwhile, in West Virginia v. B.P.J., a similar challenge to laws barring biological males from competing in female sports highlights the tension between fairness and anti-discrimination principles. Though a federal court blocked the law in 2023, the case remains active, signaling the broader legal implications of this debate. These cases are about more than policy—they address fundamental questions of identity, fairness, and the protection of women’s rights.

From a biblical perspective, these legal battles reveal the consequences of rejecting God’s authority. When society dismisses the Creator’s design for male and female, chaos replaces order, and injustice thrives.

Social Media: Amplifying Voices for Change

Social media has become a powerful tool for athletes and advocates standing for fairness. Riley Gaines has used platforms like Twitter and Instagram to share her experiences and rally support, often going viral and sparking national conversations. Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has also taken to social media, using her platform to denounce policies that undermine the integrity of women’s sports. Her decades-long legacy adds credibility to the movement, showing that the fight for fairness transcends generational divides.

Through these efforts, female athletes and their supporters bypass traditional media gatekeepers, allowing their voices to reach millions. Social media has become a frontline for cultural advocacy, amplifying biblical truths about gender and fairness in a world desperate for clarity.

Courage in the Spotlight: Profiles of Bold Athletes

Athletes like Chelsea Mitchell and Sharron Davies embody courage in the face of cultural opposition. Mitchell, a high school track athlete, became a national figure after losing multiple championships to transgender competitors. Her lawsuit challenges Connecticut’s policies, arguing that they deny female athletes equal opportunities under Title IX. Davies, a British Olympic swimmer, has faced backlash and threats for her outspoken defense of fairness in women’s sports. Yet, she remains steadfast, exemplifying the biblical call to stand firm against cultural pressures (Ephesians 6:13).

These athletes remind us that this issue is not just theoretical—it’s personal. Their stories highlight the cost of standing for truth but also the opportunity to make a lasting impact.

The Political Landscape: Protecting Women’s Sports

In the United States, the political tide is shifting. Twenty-four states have passed laws banning biological males from competing in female sports, reflecting a growing commitment to fairness and preserving women’s athletic opportunities. Dubbed “Save Women’s Sports Acts,” these laws respond to cultural confusion with legislative clarity.

The Supreme Court, at the federal level, is ready to tackle cases that could significantly influence the future of these policies. These efforts highlight the broader cultural pushback against the rejection of God’s created order and the growing demand for policies that reflect biblical truth.

A Call to Action: Upholding Truth and Fairness

Restoring fairness in women’s sports requires more than legal victories or social media campaigns. It demands a cultural transformation rooted in biblical truth. As Christians, we must:

  • Support affected athletes by attending events and amplifying their voices.
  • Advocate for policies that uphold God’s design for males and females.
  • Engage in respectful, truth-filled dialogue about the consequences of rejecting biblical principles.

This is also a moment for courage. The bold actions of athletes, teams, and advocates inspire us to stand firm in our convictions, trusting that God’s truth will ultimately prevail.

Conclusion: Truth Will Triumph

The landscape is shifting, marking the close of an era where fairness was subordinated to ideological pursuits. This movement transcends athletics—it is a battle for truth, justice, and the preservation of opportunities hard-won by generations of women. These courageous actions send an unmistakable message: society can no longer ignore the consequences of rejecting God’s created order.

This is about more than lawsuits or legislation—it is about reclaiming a cultural foundation built on truth and fairness. Women’s sports must once again embody excellence, hard work, and the unique abilities God has given female athletes. The time to act is now. Truth will triumph because it reflects the character of the One who created it.
